Charming antique "High Wall" Cape built in 1895. Wonderful pine floors throughout this well maintained three bedroom classic! Newer windows and roof (7 yrs). Private, beautifully landscaped lot with cedar stockade fence. Large Master bedroom. Town water and sewer. 325 Main Street in Eliot, Maine consists of a lot approximately one third of an acre with the house set back from the road on a slight hill. A paved shared by the owners of a house in the rear who have a deeded right-of-way on the driveway. The back yard is enclosed by a gray solid cedar capped fence with gates that open and close from both sides. One gate leads to the front yard and the other to the rear parking area. Because the back yard can be completely enclosed it offers privacy for adults and safety for children. A large ash tree and an oak shade the back yard, and two other ash trees line the left border of the property. Three-foot wide borders follow the fence perimeters; climbing hydrangeas (white), akebia vines (purple), and fall-blooming white clematis can be found on two sections of the fence. Shrubs including blue hydrangeas, Korean boxwood, euonymous and Philadelphus (mock orange) are located near the house and along the borders. A large white Korean dogwood (Cornus Kousa) and a Stella cherry tree are found near the back border. The dogwood produces lush white flowers in spring and bright red berries in the fall. Perennials such as iris, peonies, columbine, polygonatum (Solomon’s seal) and pink malva are interspersed in the borders. This house is a white high wall cape, built about 1895. The house is duplicated many times in Eliot and Kittery with various additions (side and front porches, dormers, full additions). The roof and chimney were replaced in 2000, and replacement windows that slide quickly for easy cleaning were installed at the same time. These windows have been very successful because they cut down on heating costs by more than 50%. The house is kept very warm in winter and even so it uses only 600-700 gallons of oil per year. The upstairs is heated by circulation using the original grates cut in the ceiling of the first floor. A 200 amp electrical panel with circuit breakers has been installed in 2007. In addition, new front steps and railings were installed in 2007. The exterior is vinyl siding, except for wood trim at the fascias and around the front door. All the wood trim has been cleaned, scraped, and painted in 2007. The house has beautiful wide pumpkin pine floors throughout, except for narrow white pine in the upstairs hall and two of the three bedrooms. Nearly all the walls are plaster and the woodwork is original. The house has a central stairway leading from the front door up to the second floor. The living room is found on the right side of the house and includes 6 large windows which let in much light from east, west, and northern exposures. This room includes a brick hearth framed in oak and a red enamel Vermont Castings woodstove and red enamel stovepipe. The cost of the woodstove can be negotiated, or the woodstove can be removed by the owner. The woodstove, purchased in 1997, has glass windows and can be used like a fireplace with its fine mesh grate. The bathroom with shower, tub and toilet is located just off the living room. The dining room, about half the size of the living room, is found on the left side of the house and has three large windows facing east and south. It includes a closet near the doorway to the kitchen. The kitchen is also about half the size of the living room, includes a pantry and one large south-facing window and one small window over the double stainless steel sink. Appliances include a refrigerator and a 2004 stainless steel stove as well as a washer and dryer located in the basement. The back door in the kitchen leads out to a large set of rear steps facing south in the back yard. A center hall leads upstairs to three bedrooms. The master bedroom is the same size as the living room with sloping eaves on the low walls and two full size windows on the high wall facing north. A large hall closet also opens into this room, which has the same wide pine floors found in the downstairs. The other two bedrooms (one full window each facing south) have lovely narrow pine floors. One has a large deep closet and three drawers built right into the low wall and the other has a regular sized closet and a door connecting these two bedrooms. The cellar has a poured concrete floor and foundation of fieldstone andbrick. The oil-fired furnace, oil tank and electric water heater are located here, as are a washer and dryer. A bulkhead leads out to the driveway on the right side of the property. In very wet weather the cellar floor does get slightly wet, but it is sloped to an underground outlet at the front of the property and a sump pump has never been needed.
